The Thomas Crown Affair: Michael B. Jordan reinvents the iconic heist thriller.

Michael B. Jordan is bringing a fresh perspective to one of cinema’s most iconic heist stories, taking on the triple role of director, star and producer of The Thomas Crown Affair, arriving in Australian cinemas March next year.

The Amazon MGM Studios film reimagines the sophisticated world of Thomas Crown, the charismatic art thief immortalised by Steve McQueen in the 1968 original and later Pierce Brosnan in the 1999 remake. But while the film will retain the franchise’s signature glamour, intrigue and romance, Jordan is giving its central character a new sense of purpose.

In previous iterations, Crown was a wealthy thrill-seeker who stole priceless artworks simply because he could. This time, his heists are driven by a more personal mission: reclaiming precious artefacts taken or traded over generations and returning them to their rightful creators.

“I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination,” Jordan told Variety. “Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance.”

That shift sets the stage for a different kind of cat-and-mouse thriller. Adria Arjona plays a former FBI agent determined to catch Crown, with their pursuit promising the chemistry and romantic tension synonymous with the franchise.

Audiences will undoubtedly be eager to see Jordan return to the big screen following his Best Actor Oscar win for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, with his latest project arriving at a defining moment in his career. The film also marks his next major directorial venture following the box office success of Creed III, further cementing his credentials both in front of and behind the camera.

With its sophisticated storytelling, star power and luxury-driven aesthetic, The Thomas Crown Affair is particularly well positioned to appeal to premium AB audiences aged 25–54.

Combining a recognised film franchise with contemporary storytelling and Jordan's undeniable star power, The Thomas Crown Affair is shaping up to be one of 2027's standout cinematic releases.

The Thomas Crown Affair releases in cinemas March 4.
